The best can opener for arthritis or people with weak hands require as little strength as possible to operate. So obviously the best can openers for arthritis sufferers would be an electric model . Super simple to just put the can near the blade and let the opener do it’s magic.

However, there are some disadvantages to electric can openers. For one thing, they require electricity. Counter space may also be a challenge. Your electrical outlet may not be anywhere near where you might have some space on your counter. That can make it a challenge to plug  it in. This is where a battery operated can opener might be a solution.

More ergonomic designs have made manual can openers much more user friendly for people with arthritis. They are less expensive and will fit nicely in a kitchen drawer.

Things to look for in the best can opener for people with arthritis should include things like:

Manual Can Openers

The best manual can openers have large, cushy, oversized knobs on them that are easy to turn. They also have longer handles on them to give you a better grip and more leverage. This promotes the use of the larger joints preserving small joints. It will take less energy to get the job done.

Advantages of manual can openers are that they are lightweight and easy to stash in a kitchen drawer out of the way. And they are typically less expensive than other models.

However, if you have weak hands or sensitive wrists the twisting action may be difficult for you. Another challenge is that the lid tends to fall into the can after it is cut off and the sharp edges could be a safety hazard. Some electric models have magnets  on them to prevent this issue.

Battery Operated Can Openers

Battery operated can openers have the advantage of fitting in a drawer so you can stash them out of the way. They operate with a touch of a button so they are easy to use.

However, there are a couple of drawbacks with them. They don’t have the power of an electric model, so don’t expect them to work quite as well. The biggest disadvantage is that they are powered by batteries and they can burn through them fairly quickly depending on how much they are used. So you will always want to keep extra batteries on hand.
